The experience

The day starts at Lucerne Railway Station at 7:45am. You'll travel by train for 50 minutes along two lake shores, then switch to a bus and a historic funicular that climbs steeply to Stoos, a car-free mountain village at 4,265 feet. A brief walk through the village brings you to a chairlift station. The 20-minute chairlift ride to Klingenstock's summit is quiet and gradual, letting the alpine panorama open as you rise. This is where the real hike begins: a 3 to 4 hour traverse along a mountain ridge from peak to peak, with sturdy steel cables and chains anchoring the steepest sections.

The route passes through working alpine farmland where you may see farmers harvesting wild hay on slopes so steep that a refuge hut explains both the method and its ecological importance. You'll stop for a one-hour picnic lunch (bring your own food and drinks) at one of several viewpoints along the way, then make a short steep final push to Fronalpstock, where the highest restaurant in the canton of Schwyz sits with an unbeatable view over all of Lake Lucerne. Spend about an hour there before a chairlift carries you back down to Stoos.

The return to Lucerne takes you by bus and train, arriving between 5pm and 6pm depending on which route you choose, or you can pay a small extra fee to return by boat instead. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the group size stays small enough that the pace and stops can adjust to the group's rhythm.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 15 years). Under 6: they can't be included in the booking.

How steep is the actual hiking, and what does the cable support mean?

The 3 to 4 hour ridge hike follows an alpine trail that meanders between peaks. Sturdy steel cables and chains are fixed at critical steep sections to provide added security where the slope is steepest. The chairlift and funicular do most of the elevation gain for you.

What should I bring for the picnic lunch?

You must bring your own food and drinks to eat during the one-hour lunch break along the trail. Lucerne Railway Station has shops where you can purchase items before the 8:18am train departure.

What if the weather is bad?

The tour runs only in favorable weather conditions. If it's canceled due to poor weather, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund.

Does the price include the restaurant stop at Fronalpstock?

The restaurant meal at Fronalpstock is not included in the tour price. You'll pay separately for food and drinks there. The optional boat return to Lucerne also costs extra.
