The experience

The route starts at Piazza della Riforma, Lugano's main square, then moves to the harbor for a short cruise across Lake Ceresio to Cassarate. From there, the cable railway, running since 1908, climbs a quarter-hour to the summit, where the view opens across the Bernese and Vallese Alps and down to the lake spreading below. The funicular is included. You step off at the top and the landscape is simply there, unfiltered.

The village of Brè itself is the second half of the day. It has stayed a rural settlement (narrow streets, old Ticinese houses, the Church of San Fedele with frescoes by Joseph Birò), but artists have moved in over decades and left their work behind. The Wilhelm Schmid Museum occupies the painter's former home. Open-air sculptures by Aligu Sassu, Armando Losa and others sit in the squares and along the paths. A guide who speaks English, Italian, French or German (whichever matches your group) walks you through and explains what you're seeing. The walk is easy to medium, and the pace is slow enough for children with comfortable shoes.

Grotti and restaurants with panoramic terraces dot the village if you want to eat or drink there. Bring money, as these are not included. The tour ends on the mountain, so you'll either take the funicular back down to Cassarate and return by boat to the city, or stay longer and make your own way back. Public transport runs from Cassarate if you miss the group descent.
