The experience

The helicopter leaves Bern-Belp airport and climbs over the first Alpine chain, passing Lake Thun with its distinctive glacier-fed turquoise water. From the cockpit you see mountain huts perched at over 2,840 metres where hikers overnight, and the scale of the peaks becomes clear only from the air. The route takes you past the Breithorn with its eternal ice fields before reaching the Matterhorn itself: the triangular summit that defines the Swiss Alps. Seeing all four corners of this historic mountain from above is the centerpiece of the flight.

The Aletsch Glacier dominates the middle section: the largest glacier in Switzerland spreads across the landscape below, and from altitude the different colours of the ice walls are visible in a way ground-level views cannot match. You also see how much the glacier has receded in recent years. The flight circles Sion, the capital of Valais canton, where houses stack into steep valley walls and the Rhone river cuts through. A live guide in English or German points out the geography, history and culture of each region as you pass, and headsets in the helicopter let every passenger hear clearly over the engine noise.

The tour includes all fees and taxes, a souvenir from FunFlights, and air-conditioned seating. Minimum age is 6 years. Maximum weight per person is 125 kg (275 lbs). Smoking is not permitted in the helicopter.

What is the Matterhorn like from a helicopter compared to seeing it from the ground?

The Matterhorn's triangular shape and all four corners are visible only from the air, and the size of the rock rising from the ground becomes clear in a way that ground views cannot show. From the cockpit, the mountain appears unique and beautiful because you can see its full geometry and scale at once.

Does the flight go over the Aletsch Glacier, and what does it look like from above?

Yes, the Aletsch Glacier is flown over as part of the route. From the helicopter you can see the different colours of the ice, the spectacular ice walls, and how much the glacier has melted and become smaller in recent years: details visible from altitude but not from the ground.

What other lakes and mountains are included on this flight?

The flight passes Lake Thun with its turquoise glacier water, the Breithorn with its eternal ice fields, and Oeschinensee with its distinctive turquoise-blue colour. You also fly over Sion, the capital of Valais, where the valley and Rhone river are visible from above.
