The experience
The tour departs at 10am from the Lugano Region tourist office in Via Magatti, beginning at the lake shore just beneath Monte San Salvatore. Before heading up the mountain, you'll visit the Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, where the most important Renaissance fresco in Switzerland covers the dividing wall: Bernardino Luini's monumental Passion and Crucifixion, painted in 1529. The church also holds Luini's Last Supper and a luminous Virgin Mary with baby Jesus, both showing the influence of Leonardo. You'll also see Lugano Arte Cultura, the city's cultural hub overlooking the lake, which hosts art, theatre, music and dance throughout the year.
The cable car takes you from the base to the summit in 10 minutes, climbing 912 meters. At the top, you have free time to walk the trails, sit with a view across the horizon, or picnic. The mountain is known as the Sugarloaf of Switzerland for the way it rises alone from the city. The Museum San Salvatore on the summit holds religious art and exhibits on the region's geology and lightning research. The cable car runs every 30 minutes from morning to late afternoon, and the descent is included in the tour price. Food and drinks are not included, though the panoramic Restaurant Vetta San Salvatore offers a 10% discount to tour participants.
The walk is graded easy to medium. Comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen are suggested. Groups are capped at eight people per booking, and a live guide leads in the two most common languages among the group. The guide may cancel or shorten the excursion if weather turns bad. Strollers must be folded to ride the cable car. Be on time for the 10am start.
