The experience

The walk starts at 10am from the Lugano Region tourist office in Via Magatti 6 and heads downhill toward Gandria along the Olive Trail, a 1.5-hour route that winds through countryside between Castagnola and ancient olive groves where trees have recently been replanted. The path is marked with an olive logo and carries 18 panels describing the olive tree's history, botany, cultivation and products: a self-contained education in what the region has grown for centuries. You descend through hillsides and reach Gandria perched at the base of Mount Brè, a fishermen's village on the lake shore known for its narrow traffic-free streets, stone stairs and views that open between buildings.

Gandria's center sits around the 16th-century church of San Vigilio, with its baroque interior and late-medieval belfry. The village has many restaurants and grotti (traditional shelters carved into the rock) where you can eat something and rest before the return journey. The boat leaves Gandria at 1:55pm and arrives back in Lugano at 2:40pm, crossing Lake Lugano, also called Lake Ceresio, which has drawn visitors for centuries. The entire outing takes approximately 5 hours from start to finish.

The walk is medium difficulty and requires at least moderate fitness. Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The tour is subject to favorable weather and may be canceled if conditions turn poor, in which case you get an alternative date or a full refund. A live guide leads the group in English, Italian, French or German. Minimum passenger numbers apply, and the operator reserves the right to cancel after confirmation if the group is too small, offering an alternative or full refund in that case. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries.
