A castle on an island in Lake Geneva inspired one of literature's darkest poems.

This 6.5-hour guided tour from Lausanne drives the Swiss Riviera to four stops: the terraced Lavaux vineyards (a UNESCO site), Chaplin's World museum in Vevey, Chillon Castle on the water between Montreux and Villeneuve, and free time in Montreux for lunch. Transport by coach, a professional guide in English, entry to both museums, and bottled water are included; food and drinks during the Montreux break are at your own expense.

  • See UNESCO Lavaux vineyards terraces
  • Explore Chillon Castle
  • Enjoy free time and lunch in Montreux

The Experience

Six and a half hours means the day holds together without backtracking. You leave Lausanne by coach and head west along Lake Geneva with the Alps in view, stopping first at Lavaux — the terraced vineyard landscape that UNESCO protects. The vines grow on steep slopes facing three directions of sun, and the photo stop gives you the shape of it before you move on.

Chaplin's World comes next, in Vevey. You spend an hour and a half inside the museum, walking through sets from his films and displays about Charlie Chaplin the man and the artist — it is a Hollywood-style studio designed by Grévin, the wax museum group. The route then takes you to Chillon Castle, a fortress on a small island at the far western end of the lake, between Montreux and Villeneuve. You have about an hour to walk it. The castle controlled trade across Lake Geneva for centuries and held political prisoners in its dungeons; Lord Byron saw those dungeons and wrote a poem about them that made the place famous in literature.

Montreux is the last stop, and you get an hour and a half of free time there. It is a resort town built on the reputation of the jazz festival and the artists who have played it — Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, BB King, Ray Charles. Freddy Mercury lived here and recorded Queen's last album in the Mountain Studio inside the casino; the studio is open to visitors. You can wander the shops, walk the waterfront, or sit for lunch (at your own cost). The driver and guide stay with the group the whole day.
