The experience

The day starts with a train ride from Bern through Interlaken and into Grindelwald, where a 10-minute walk brings you to the gondola station. The gondola carries you up to First in about 25 minutes, and from there the hike to Lake Bachalp takes 50 to 60 minutes at an easy pace. The lake sits in a cirque of rock with views across to Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. You'll have time to rest, photograph and eat before the return walk, which takes roughly the same time back to First.

The tour includes a break at First's famous Cliff Walk on the way down, and the return journey retraces the route: gondola back to Grindelwald, then train through Interlaken and back to Bern. The whole day runs about seven hours from start to finish. Your guide speaks English or German and travels with the group throughout, sharing details about alpine plants and local traditions along the way. Bring solid, comfortable footwear, layered clothing, sun and rain protection, and snacks or water. The operator notes that food and drinks can be purchased on the way if you don't pack your own.
