The Experience
How does a self-guided tour work? You download the app or open it in your browser, then follow a mission where Jackson Wilde, a city explorer, needs your help solving quizzes at each stop. The app guides you through the route—starting with the Jet d'Eau, the massive water fountain on Lake Geneva that has become the city's symbol, then moving to the Flower Clock, a fully functional timepiece made from thousands of seasonal flowers that change color throughout the year. You're not following a guide's voice or a fixed schedule; you move at your own speed, answer the quizzes when you're ready, and accumulate points as you learn about each monument's history.
The eleven stops weave through Geneva's Old Town and lakeside landmarks. After the Flower Clock comes the 14th-century Molard Tower, then L'Ancien Arsenal, a 17th-century building with five large arches housing a collection of 18th-century cannons. St. Pierre Cathedral sits at the highest point in the Old Town and anchors the middle of the route. You'll also pass the Museum of Arts and History, housed in a Beaux-Arts building with an impressive façade; the Russian Church, recognizable by its distinctive golden domes; the Treille Bench, a 120-meter wooden promenade claimed to be the world's longest; the Reformation Wall, a monumental stone commemorating Protestant Reformation leaders; the Grand Théâtre, which opened in 1879 with ornate Beaux-Arts styling; and the Frankenstein Statue, depicting the monster with inscriptions tied to Mary Shelley's novel. The app provides guides and context for each one, so you're learning as you move.
The activity is available in English, French, German, and Spanish, and it works for all fitness levels since you set the pace. Public transportation is nearby if you need it, and service animals are allowed. Keep in mind that this is a smartphone-based game, not an audio tour—you're reading and solving quizzes on the screen—and entrance fees to any monuments you want to enter are not included. Two to three hours is the typical window, though you can stretch it longer if you want to linger at any stop or shorten it by skipping the quizzes.
What’s included
