The experience
You start about 20 minutes from Kiruna by minibus, then trade the bus for a snowmobile. The guide fits you with high-quality Arctic gear designed to keep you warm in the cold, walks you through how to handle the machine safely, and you're off into the winter landscape. Two people ride each snowmobile (one driving, one riding as passenger), and you can switch roles during the tour so both of you get time at the controls.
The route covers roughly 32 km across rivers, lakes and forests, all of it snow-covered and quiet. Your headlights pick out the white ground beneath you while the dark sky sits open above. Halfway through, you stop for warm lingonberry juice and cake, and the guide helps you frame shots if the lights appear. The northern lights can't be promised (they depend on weather and solar activity beyond anyone's control), but the silence and the stars and the feeling of moving through the Arctic night are what you're actually riding for.
The tour runs with small groups and an English-speaking guide. Children from age 12 are welcome. Pickup from your Kiruna accommodation is included, so you don't need to arrange transport to the starting point.
