The experience

You start at Stortorget, Malmö's main square, where a monastery and church were cleared centuries ago to make room for the grand plaza. The audio guide walks you through what the City Hall, the Kockska House and the statue of King Karl X Gustav tell about the city's power. From there you pass Sankt Petri Kyrka, a Brick Gothic church begun in the early 1300s whose tower once guided sailors home. The guide explains its Hanseatic trading links without requiring you to go inside. The route then follows the canals that started as military fortifications, passing the 1856 railway station that linked Sweden to Copenhagen and the park built on the old earth ramparts where you can pause at a canal-side viewpoint.

The walk moves through the city's industrial and cultural layers: a yellow 1819 riding hall for hussars that now holds restaurants, a 1901 power station turned modern art museum, an 1882 church ringed by twelve smaller towers, and an 1851 windmill built on a former bastion where you can spot the Turning Torso in the distance. You end at Malmöhus Castle, one of Scandinavia's oldest Renaissance castles, where the audio guide tells the story of the Earl of Bothwell's imprisonment and the moment Skåne changed hands between Denmark and Sweden. Entry to the museums inside the castle is not included, but standing in front of it closes the historical arc the tour traces.
