Step-by-step itinerary
Forest walk and sauna experience
- Walk through virgin forest
- Pause to make fire and eat
- Enjoy hot chocolate by forest lake
- Relax in wood burning outdoor sauna
The experience
The hike starts in virgin forest that sits just 20 minutes from the city centre. You walk through the woods at whatever pace suits you, stopping to build a fire by a forest lake where you eat lunch and drink hot chocolate. The guide leads the way and talks about Swedish life, culture and how people here connect with nature across all seasons, and if the conversation goes that direction, about what makes Sweden one of the world's safest and most equal countries. The whole thing is built around what the guide has learned growing up here and traveling elsewhere.
After the walk, you move to a wood-burning outdoor sauna in the guide's garden. You get towels and can warm up in the heat before heading back. The sauna is the core of the experience: it's how Swedish people have used nature for centuries, and sitting in one that burns wood instead of electric heat is the real thing. The guide will share that part of the culture too, if you're interested. Hot chocolate and tea are always on hand.
Groups stay small and must include at least one woman. The guide speaks English, Swedish or Danish. If you have young children, they can come along: infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome. Public transport runs nearby if you need it.
