The experience
The drive from Kiruna to Abisko takes 90 minutes through changing weather zones, which means you can catch glimpses of aurora even when cloud cover looks solid in one place. Your Sami guides navigate by the conditions they read in real time, so the route itself becomes part of the hunt. Once in Abisko village, you sit down to a three-course dinner built from what the season offers (moose tartar, smoked arctic char, cloudberries with vanilla ice cream), and the guides talk through Sami culture, the landscape, and what makes this corner of Sweden one of the best places on earth to see the northern lights.
After dinner, the plan depends on what the sky is doing. If the weather clears in the Abisko area, you walk out into the night to look for aurora and photograph it. The guides are trained photo guides, so they'll help you frame shots if you bring a camera or phone. If clouds are still thick in Abisko, you drive back toward Kiruna, and often the sky opens up somewhere along the way. That's when you stop to watch and shoot. Tripods for cameras or phones are included, along with headlamps so you can move safely in the dark, and cover clothes and shoes if you need them.
The guides speak English or Swedish, and the tour runs year-round during aurora season. Dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) are accommodated if you note them when you book. Pickup from Kiruna is included. Children from age 3 can join, and strollers or specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with very small children.

Is this one for you?The tour runs through the evening and night, so you're out in cold darkness for the full 5.5 hours. Bring warm layers and expect to stand outside for extended periods if aurora appears. If you want to photograph the northern lights with professional guidance and don't mind the long, cold hours, this format lets you hunt across multiple weather zones rather than staying in one spot.
