The experience

You get picked up from your hotel and driven by a local guide who knows the island and moves at your pace. The four options let you pick what matters most: if you have a free afternoon, the mud bath and waterfall gets you to Sulphur Springs Park and Toraille Waterfall in a few hours; if you want cultural depth, the chocolate and rum tour takes you to Hotel Chocolat for a bean-to-bar experience and a local tasting; if you're drawn to geology and landscape, the scenic nature and volcano option covers the geothermal area and botanical gardens; if you have the full day, the Premium Experience strings together Castries Market, Morne Fortune (the site of 18th-century battles between French and British forces), Marigot Bay (called "the most beautiful in the Caribbean" by travel writer James Michener), Sulphur Springs, and Toraille Waterfall. Castries Market appears on most itineraries. It's where locals shop and the energy is real, not staged. Morne Fortune sits on a hilltop overlooking the capital and includes the Government House and old military barracks. The name means "Hill of Good Luck" in French, though the history here is brutal. Marigot Bay is a deep, sheltered harbor ringed by steep hills and was even featured in the 1967 film Dr. Doolittle. Sulphur Springs Park is the most active geothermal zone in the Lesser Antilles, and Toraille Waterfall drops 50 feet into a landscaped garden pool near Soufriere. Depending on your option, you might also explore waterfalls, nature trails, or visit Derek Walcott Square and the Cathedral: the largest church in the Caribbean at 200 feet long and 100 feet wide.

The tour runs 5 to 6 hours depending on which option you choose. Hotel drop-off is included, and you'll need to bring cash for lunch and any entrance fees to attractions: the operator doesn't bundle those into the price. Bring one towel per person if you plan to use the mud baths. The driver will wait 15 minutes after your pickup time. After that, you're marked a no-show. What is Sulphur Springs Park and what do you actually do there?

Sulphur Springs Park, also called Mount Soufriere, is the most active geothermal area in the Lesser Antilles. A place where sulfur was once mined and the earth still shows its heat. You visit the mud baths and thermal springs. Bring a towel and wear clothes you don't mind staining, since the mineral-rich mud is the whole point.

How much of the day does a full-day Premium Experience actually cover?
