The experience
Wilpattu is known as the best place in Sri Lanka to see leopards, and the park's dense forest and open water tanks create the conditions that draw them out. Your guide will explain what you're seeing as the jeep moves through the landscape, not just the big cats, but also elephants, Sri Lankan spot deer, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild boar, peacocks and a range of endemic and migratory birds. The park operates from 6am to 6pm, and the timing matters: animals emerge from the forest in the early morning and again as light fades, so the 6am and 3pm departures are designed around when wildlife is active.
You'll stay inside the jeep throughout the drive, which keeps both you and the animals safe. Your guide meets you at the car park entrance and handles the route. The jeep and driver are included, as is park entry. After the three-hour safari ends, you get king coconut refreshments: a traditional touch that marks the close of the morning or evening. All taxes are built into the price.
If you don't have your own transport to the park, car transfers can be arranged on request. The park sits within reach of public transportation options as well, so getting there doesn't require a rental.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 10 years); Infant (under 3).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What animals am I most likely to see on a Wilpattu game drive?
Sri Lankan leopards are the headline (Wilpattu is the best place in the country to spot them), but you'll also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, Sri Lankan spot deer, wild boar, peacocks and a range of endemic and migratory birds. What shows up depends on the season and the time of day, which is why dawn and dusk departures offer the best chances.
Why do the game drives start at 6am or 3pm?
Animals emerge from the dense forest to feed and drink during the coolest parts of the day. The 6am departure catches them in the early morning. The 3pm departure positions you in the park as light fades and activity picks up again. Mid-day drives see far less wildlife movement.
How long is the safari and what happens after?
The game drive lasts three hours. When it ends, your guide brings you back to the car park and you receive king coconut refreshments as part of the traditional hospitality included with the tour.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to Wilpattu National Park?
Car transfers to the park can be arranged on request as an add-on. Public transportation options also run near the park if you prefer to make your own way there.
What should I bring or wear on the game drive?
Wear neutral colors and bring sun protection, binoculars if you have them, and a camera. You'll stay inside the jeep at all times, so the vehicle provides some shelter, but the sun exposure during a three-hour drive is real, especially on the morning departure.
