The first splash hit my face and I tasted salt, but honestly, it felt good. There were a few other beginners nearby, all laughing at themselves too. Ama grinned every time one of us wiped out (which was often), but he never made it feel embarrassing — more like we were in on some inside joke with the sea.
I didn’t expect to learn so much about surfing safety or how to actually read the waves here in Weligama. Our local guide pointed out which sets to watch for and why you never turn your back on the ocean — little things you’d only get from someone who grew up here. The rash guard felt weirdly tight at first but after a while I forgot about it, just focused on trying to stand up without flailing too much. The water was warm, and there’s this smell of coconut oil in the air from everyone’s sunscreen.
The best part? When I finally caught a small unbroken wave — not graceful at all, but I did it. Ama clapped and shouted something in Sinhala that I definitely didn’t understand (he laughed when I tried to repeat it). My arms felt like noodles by the end, but somehow that made lunch taste even better later. If you’re thinking about taking a private surf lesson for beginners in Weligama, just do it. You’ll probably fall a lot and maybe get sand everywhere, but there’s something about those little wins out there that sticks with you longer than you’d think.
