The experience
The park's dry zone forest is home to 23 mammal species and over 140 birds, but the draw for most visitors is the elephant herds that move through in the late afternoon. Your driver knows where to position the jeep for sightings and can identify the Marsh elephant, a subspecies found only near the Mahaveli River. The route also passes water bodies where Mugger crocodiles and water monitors rest on the banks, and open areas where you might spot the endemic purple-faced langur or toque macaque, or the rarer sloth bear and golden palm civet.
The three-hour drive covers enough ground to catch the park's bird activity: the endemic red-faced malkoha, Sri Lankan junglefowl, peafowl, painted storks and black-headed ibis all move through the same habitat. Around 50 butterfly species drift through the forest, eight of them found nowhere else. Your driver carries binoculars and a water bottle for each passenger and knows the terrain well enough to stop when movement catches the eye.
Pickup happens within 5km of the park gate. If your hotel sits further out, you can arrange a different pickup point at checkout. The jeep holds up to six passengers, so the ride stays small and the driver can adjust pace to what the group wants to see. Morning and afternoon departures both work, though evening drives tend to catch more elephant activity as the herds move toward water.

Is this one for you?Book an afternoon or evening departure if you want the best chance of seeing elephant herds, which move through the park as the day cools. Morning drives work well for bird watching and avoid the heat, but elephants are less active early in the day.

Sloth bears and golden palm civets are rarer but do appear in the park.
How long is the safari and what time does it start?
