The experience
Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you to Dambana Veddha Village, where you'll meet the Chief at his residence to seek permission to explore. From there, he leads you to the village museum for a demonstration of traditional hunting methods, cultural practices and folk dance: a direct look at how the Vedda people have lived for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence places Vedda ancestors on the island as far back as 10,000 BC, making this one of the oldest continuous cultures in Sri Lanka.
The route includes a stop at Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara, an ancient Buddhist temple believed to mark Gautama Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka and designated as one of the 16 sacred religious sites in the country. Lunch is served here before you continue to Sorabora Lake, a massive irrigation reservoir built without the Bisokotuwa (the structural heart used in all other large ancient reservoirs), a groundbreaking engineering choice that enabled the ancients to construct such vast water systems from the 4th century BC onward. You'll take a boat ride across the lake, then settle in for high tea by the water before your guide drives you back to the hotel.
