The experience

The hike starts from your hotel in Ella and climbs to Little Adam's Peak, which rises to about 1,141 meters. The trek winds through tea plantations and forest, and from the summit you see Ella Gap, the plains below, and the distant peaks of the central highlands. The path then crosses country to the Nine Arches Bridge, a brick and stone railway viaduct built during the British colonial era. You walk over it and see the gorge it spans.

From the bridge the route continues to Demodara Railway Station, where the track loops back on itself: a piece of architecture found only at Demodara in Sri Lanka. A local guide leads the whole day and speaks English. You get refreshment drinks with cookies partway through and a local lunch, so you're not carrying food or stopping to find a restaurant.
