The experience

Your driver collects you from your hotel in Trincomalee or Nilaveli and drives you inland to Sigiriya, a rock fortress rising 180 meters above the surrounding plain. A professional guide meets you at the site and walks you through the ancient complex and its museum, where you'll see tools, sculptures, jewelry and a prehistoric section alongside the main exhibits. From the rock itself, you can sometimes spot elephants bathing in the river below.

After Sigiriya, you stop for lunch at a local restaurant serving either Western or Sri Lankan traditional food. The afternoon takes you to three shorter stops: the Aloy Silk and Batik Shop, where visitors can try on a Sri Lankan saree and photograph themselves in it; the Ayurvedic Herbal and Spice Garden, where you walk through plantings of cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and mace; and the Wood Carvings and Gem Museum if time allows. These are shopping stops, but the spice garden is the one most travelers linger in.

The day ends at Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and sacred pilgrimage destination for 22 centuries. Five cave sanctuaries hold 157 Buddha statues and Buddhist mural paintings covering 2,100 square meters, many painted in the 2nd century and depicting scenes from Lord Buddha's life. The Golden Buddha Statue is the centerpiece. Your guide explains the site before the drive back to your hotel. The full day, including travel time, runs 7 to 10 hours depending on traffic and how long you spend at each stop.
