The experience
The tour starts in the Fort area, the old colonial district named for its Portuguese and Dutch fortifications, then moves to the Colombo National Museum to walk through galleries of local art, crafts and archaeological finds. From there you drive through the commercial heart of the city and into Pettah, a dense shopping bazaar packed with vendors, ancient vehicles, bargains, and a visible mix of faiths. You'll pass a Hindu temple, a Buddhist temple, and the red-and-white Jami Ul Alfar Mosque built in 1908.
The final stop is Galle Face Green, a five-hectare seafront park that stretches 500 meters along the coast in the center of the city. You have time to walk the grounds and try traditional street food from the vendors there. Your driver handles all navigation and parking. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the pace is set by the stops themselves rather than a rigid schedule.
