The experience
The Archaeological Museum near the site entrance is where most tours start, and for good reason: scale models of the Gal Vihara and Royal Palace show you what these ruins looked like when they stood complete, and the exhibits of statues, stone carvings and pottery give context before you walk among the actual remains. From there, the guide takes you through the Royal Palace (once a seven-story structure with walls over a meter thick), and into the Sacred Quadrangle, where the Vatadage sits as a masterpiece of carved stone: four Buddha statues face the cardinal directions, surrounded by concentric pillars and a delicately sculpted moonstone at the entrance.
The Gal Vihara is the centerpiece: four Buddha figures carved directly into a granite rock face, with a 14-foot reclining Buddha at the center depicting the Buddha's passage into Nirvana. The detail of the carvings and the serene setting make it the most photographed spot on the tour. Beyond that are the Rankoth Vehera, a 55-meter stupa built in the 12th century and still an active place of worship where locals leave flowers; the Alahana Pirivena monastic complex with its colossal standing Buddha inside the Lankatilaka Image House; and the Thivanka Image House, famous for its well-preserved murals of scenes from the Buddha's life. Shiva Devalaya No. 2 shows the Hindu temples that stood alongside Buddhist monuments, a reminder that Polonnaruwa was a multicultural city. Pabalu Vehera, the "Beads Stupa," and Deepa Uyana, King Nissankamalla's pleasure garden with its Cool Palace pavilion, round out the lesser-known stops that a private guide can linger on without rushing the group.
The tour runs six to seven hours. Lunch is not included, though rice and curry is the local standard. The guide speaks English and adjusts the route and timing to what interests you most, whether that is the architecture, the religious history, or the engineering of the 12th-century reservoir, Parakrama Samudraya, which you can view at sunset if the schedule allows. Entry to the site costs USD 30 per person and is paid separately. Transportation is private if you book the full-day or car-based option, or you can arrange your own way to the site.
