Snorkeling at Pigeon Island from Uppuveli Beach
Swim through coral gardens where sea turtles drift past
Snorkel the coral reefs of Pigeon Island National Park, one of Sri Lanka's top marine sanctuaries, with a professional guide, boat transfers and all equipment provided. The boat holds a maximum of 7 people, keeping the group small and the reef undisturbed. A scenic boat ride takes you from Uppuveli Beach to the island, where you'll spend the morning in the water exploring tropical fish, sea turtles and Black Tip Reef Sharks before relaxing on the beach. The experience runs 3 to 4 hours and suits all fitness levels.
Step-by-step itinerary
Snorkeling at Pigeon Island
- Boat ride to Pigeon Island
- Snorkel vibrant coral reefs
- Swim with tropical fish and turtles
- Relax on Pigeon Island beach
The Experience
The boat leaves Uppuveli Beach with your guide and up to six other snorkelers, heading out to Pigeon Island National Park. Once you reach the reef, you enter the water with your mask and fins already fitted, and the guide positions the group along the coral gardens where the fish congregate. Tropical species move through the branches in schools, and if the conditions align, sea turtles graze on the seagrass nearby. Black Tip Reef Sharks patrol deeper water but stay clear of the shallows where you're swimming.
Your guide stays in the water with the group the whole time, pointing out the reef structure and the animals moving through it. The coral itself is the anchor—brain coral, staghorn, and soft corals create the architecture where everything else lives. You're not watching from a boat or standing on a platform; you're floating above it, moving with the current and the guide's direction. Snacks and fresh water wait on the boat between water sessions.
After the snorkeling, you have time on Pigeon Island's beach to dry off and rest before the boat returns to Uppuveli. The whole outing takes 3 to 4 hours from start to finish. Guides speak English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language, so you can ask questions about what you're seeing in real time.
