The Experience

I didn’t expect the sea to smell so sharp this early — or for the boat to feel that smooth when we left Mirissa harbor. The crew joked about our sleepy faces as we climbed aboard (I’d barely finished my coffee), but their energy was kind of contagious. Our guide, Nuwan, pointed out the first flying fish before I even realized we were moving fast — there’s something about the way he said “Look left!” that made everyone scramble to the rail, laughing at ourselves. The water out here is just… different. Like it’s thicker or bluer than I’m used to.

About forty minutes in, someone shouted — not sure who — and suddenly everyone was up again. Blue whale! I thought my heart would actually stop. Nuwan explained how these are the largest creatures on earth, but honestly all I could think was how quiet it got for a second as we watched its back break the surface. There were dolphins too, racing alongside us for a bit (I tried to film but mostly caught my own excited voice).
