What’s the experience like?

Salt clung to my skin before I even hit the water—Kalpitiya’s breeze is no joke. Our instructor, Nuwan, handed out harnesses and checked every line twice. You’ll hear the canvas snap overhead while you’re still learning to steer. The lagoon’s shallow edge is warm underfoot, and there’s always a faint smell of seaweed drifting in from the far side.

We started with basics right on the sand: how to launch, safety signals, what to do if you wipe out (which I did—twice). The first time the kite pulled me up, it felt like flying for half a second before I splashed down laughing. Nuwan kept shouting tips over the wind, never losing patience. After about an hour, muscle memory kicks in and you start gliding further each time. If you’re already confident, you can just rent gear and head out solo—the regulars here are easy to spot by their sun-bleached rash guards and quick nods.
