Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Galle and Southwest Coast
- Bentota River Safari
- Visit Turtle Conservation Project
- Tour Galle Dutch Fort
The experience
The day starts early (pickup runs between 6am and 7:30am from Kalutara, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle or other southwest coast towns), and moves through four distinct stops. The Bentota River Safari takes roughly ninety minutes by boat through mangrove channels where you watch for crocodiles, water monitors and local bird species. The river narrows and opens again, and the guide points out what lives where in the ecosystem.
After the river comes the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, where staff explain why this stretch of Sri Lankan coast is a prime nesting site and how the community-run hatchery protects eggs and hatchlings. You see the turtles at different stages and learn the threats they face. The tour also includes a tea plantation and factory visit (a working operation where you see how leaves move from plant to cup), and a Buddhist temple. A gem museum and showroom rounds out the stops, though the fort is the centerpiece.
Galle Fort itself is a walled city built by the Portuguese in the 1600s and later controlled by the Dutch and British. It sits on the southwestern tip of the island where the harbor was a trade hub for centuries. The walls are intact, the streets inside are walkable, and restaurants and hotels operate within the fort. You have time to walk the ramparts and explore the inner streets. Lunch is included and happens during the day. The driver-guide speaks English throughout and handles all logistics.
