The experience
The day starts before dawn. Your guide picks you up from your hotel at 5:30 and drives you to Yala, a national park built across scrub jungles, water reservoirs, brackish lagoons and riverine habitats in Sri Lanka's Dry Zone. The morning game drive is when leopards hunt. You'll also watch for elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, Hanuman langurs, toque monkeys, mongooses, wild boar and golden jackals. Reptiles here include land and water monitors and marsh crocodiles. The guide knows where to look and what the tracks mean.
At noon you break for a picnic lunch delivered to a spot in the park, then spend an hour on the beach at leisure before the evening drive begins at two. The second game drive is your second chance to photograph leopards, and the light shifts as the afternoon cools. You leave the park at five and arrive back at your hotel by six.
Groups stay small, four travelers maximum, so the vehicle doesn't crowd the sightings and the guide can answer questions without shouting over engine noise. An air-conditioned vehicle means the heat doesn't wear you down between stops. Bottled water and snacks travel with you. Lunch is included and vegetarian options are available if you request them at booking.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years); Infant (2 to 4 years): free.
What animals am I most likely to see at Yala?
Leopards are the draw (Yala has the highest leopard density in the world), and the morning and evening drives time your visit to when they hunt. Elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, mongooses and Hanuman langurs are common. You'll also see reptiles including marsh crocodiles and monitor lizards, and the park holds many endemic bird species.
Why does the tour split into a morning drive and an evening drive?
Leopards are most active at dawn and dusk, so the two-drive structure puts you in the park during the hours they hunt. The midday break gives you time to rest and eat without missing the best wildlife viewing windows.
Is the beach time part of the tour or free time?
The hour on the beach from one to two is yours to spend as you like: swim, walk, sit and watch the water. It's built into the day so you're not driving the whole time.
How long is the drive from my hotel to Yala?
The drive depends on where you're staying. Pickup is available from Tissamaharama, Yala town, or Yala hotels. Your guide will tell you the travel time once you book and confirm your location.
What should I bring or wear?
Dress casual and bring sunscreen, a hat and binoculars if you have them. The vehicle is air-conditioned, but the morning and evening drives mean you'll be outside during cooler hours. Bottled water and snacks are provided. Lunch is included.
