We started at the Nine Arch Bridge just as a train rattled by, slow enough for us to wave at kids hanging out the windows. The jungle felt close and sort of damp, like you could smell green if that makes sense. Suresh pointed out wild ginger along the path (I tried to pronounce it in Sinhala; he laughed), and I realized I’d never seen a railway so tangled up with tea fields before.
