The experience
You'll meet the crew at Trincomalee Harbour at 5:45 a.m. and board the boat for a half-hour journey into open water. The dolphins travel in pods (sometimes super pods of 40 or more), and the Spinner Dolphins are known for their acrobatic displays: they leap, dance and show off in the water. Depending on when you visit, you may also see Blue Whales or Sperm Whales, the largest mammals on earth, which travel in family groups led by a matriarch, much like elephants do on land.
Trincomalee sits on one of the world's deepest natural harbours, positioned so that marine life congregates in these waters. The crew is experienced and dedicated to getting you close enough to witness the animals without disturbing them. You'll have lifejackets fitted for your size and age, bottled water to stay hydrated, and first aid on board if the motion unsettles your stomach. The boat itself, the lifejackets, water and all government charges are included in your booking.
The best season for Spinner Dolphins runs May through September, when hundreds gather in the area. If you're visiting between March and May, Blue Whales and Sperm Whales are more common. Either way, you're on the water for roughly two hours total, with the journey out and back taking about an hour combined and the observation time in between.
What’s included
- Lifejackets for all ages and sizes.
- bottled water.
- first aid for seasickness.
- the boat charge for the excursion.
- government taxes and service charges.
