Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Tuy and Baiona towns

  • Visit Tui Cathedral
  • Tour old town of Tuy
  • Pass by Miño river marsh and beaches
  • Walk Monte Boi fortress walls
  • See replica of caravel Pinta
  • Explore Baiona pedestrian area

The experience

The day starts at the port in Vigo and moves first to Tuy, where the late-Romanesque Tui Cathedral anchors the old quarter. You walk through medieval buildings and charming alleys, passing the Santo Domingo convent, the Wild horse monument, and the Clarisas convent: each one a layer of the different cultures that have left their mark on this historic-artistic complex. Tuy is the second most important medieval urban area in Galicia, and the guide moves you through it at a pace that lets you actually see what is there instead of rushing past it.

From Tuy, the route follows the Miño river marsh and passes Ladeira beach, the largest in Baiona, before reaching the old city itself. Baiona sits in a breathtakingly beautiful bay and functions as both a working fishing port and a tourist destination. The Monterreal fortress occupies a small peninsula enclosed by three kilometers of walls. You walk the Monte Boi route along the exterior walls parallel to the sea, with views into the bay and out toward the rockier coastline. The Parador, a building that sits between medieval fortress and Galician seigniorial architecture, stands at the fortress's heart.

The pedestrian area near the fortress holds several monuments: the Dominican mothers convent, the ex-collegiate church of Santa Maria, the Santa Liberata church, and the Holy Trinity Cross. A full-size replica of the Pinta, the caravel Columbus sailed on his first transatlantic voyage, sits here as a physical reminder of the moment Baiona received the news of a new continent. The area is lined with restaurants and terraces where you can order local wines and Spanish tapas if you want to eat. Those are not included in the tour price.

Is this one for you?Pick this tour if you want to cover two towns in one day with a guide who drives: Tuy's layered medieval quarter rewards slow exploration, while Baiona's fishing port and bay views work best as a guided stop rather than a solo wander.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly is the Monterreal fortress walk like in Baiona?

The Monte Boi walk follows the exterior walls of the fortress for three kilometers, running parallel to the sea. You get views both into the bay and out toward the rocky areas beyond it. There is also an option to walk over the walls themselves if you prefer that route instead.

Will I have time to walk through Tuy's old quarter, or is it just a quick stop?

Tuy's medieval quarter is built for exploring at your own pace. The guide takes you through the old town visiting its medieval buildings and charming alleys, including the Santo Domingo convent, the Wild horse monument, and the Clarisas convent, so you see the layers of history without being rushed.

Is there a chance to eat or drink something local during the tour?

Yes. In Baiona's pedestrian area near the fortress, there are several restaurants and terraces where you can order local wines and Spanish tapas if you want to. These are not included in the tour price, so you pay separately for anything you order.

What is the Pinta replica, and why is it in Baiona?

The Pinta is a full-size replica of the caravel Columbus sailed on his first transatlantic voyage to America. Baiona is where the ship arrived with the news of the discovery of a new continent, which is why the replica stands in the town as a monument to that moment.

How long does the whole tour take, and what's the fitness requirement?

The tour runs 6.5 hours total from port pickup to drop-off. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, so there is no special conditioning needed to join.
