The experience
Santiago de Compostela sits at the end of the Camino de Santiago, one of the world's oldest pilgrimage routes. This tour starts in Vigo and moves through the city's landmarks in sequence: Alameda Park, where a sculpture of writer Ramón María del Valle-Inclán sits on a bench overlooking the Cathedral; then Rúa do Franco, the street where students, pilgrims and locals crowd the tapas bars and shops selling local goods; and finally Plaza del Obradoiro, the plaza where the Cathedral rises surrounded by the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, the Palacio de Raxoi and the Colegio de San Xerome.
The Cathedral museum is the centerpiece. It moves through the cloister, the Chapel of Reliquaries and Treasure, the library and archive, the Tapestry Room, the Tribune with its painting collection, and the Chapter Room with rotating exhibitions. Each section deepens the connection to the Cathedral's role in the pilgrimage and to the art and spiritual objects the building has held. You walk through nine hours total, with transport by air-conditioned minivan and a guide speaking English or Spanish.
Rúa do Franco is where you eat. The street runs thick with restaurants serving Galician food: pulpo a la gallega, empanadas, fresh mussels, clams, razor clams and percebes, caldo gallego, Tetilla cheese and Tarta de Santiago. You choose the restaurant and the meal. The tour does not include lunch or drinks, so budget for both and pick the place that appeals to you as you walk the street.
