You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you’re awake or still dreaming? That’s how it felt rolling out of the port in Vigo, the morning air smelling faintly salty and a little metallic from the docks. Our guide, Marta, waved us over to these surprisingly comfy electric bikes—she laughed when I fumbled with the helmet strap (I’m hopeless). We set off through streets that felt both busy and quietly lived-in, past old men arguing softly in Gallego outside a bakery. First stop was this statue for Galician emigration—Marta told us Lola’s story. I didn’t expect to feel so much just standing there; something about the wind and her voice made it real.

The bike path hugged the coast all the way to Bouzas. There were bursts of color from fishing boats and kids chasing each other along the promenade. At Statues dos Peixes, Marta explained how barnacles are collected (way harder than it sounds) and why mussels here taste like nowhere else. She tried to teach me “percebeiro” but my accent was hopeless—she grinned anyway. The Citroen terminal loomed up behind us, oddly futuristic against all this history. Turns out that factory changed everything for Vigo, which I’d never have guessed just looking at it from a distance.

We followed the Lagares River path until suddenly Samil beach opened up—wide sand, Cíes Islands floating out on blue haze. The sun broke through for a second and I swear everyone just stopped talking to watch it. Marta pointed out Los Olmos beach and Alcabre too; honestly there were so many small coves I lost track. Somewhere near the old olive tree viewpoint we paused again—if you squint you can see most of Ría de Vigo twisting away under clouds. If Antonio’s basketry shop is open, pop in; he let me try weaving once and my fingers cramped up instantly but he just winked like he’d seen worse.

It’s funny—I thought an electric bike tour would be all about speed or scenery but really it was about these tiny moments: Marta humming an old football chant under her breath, salt drying on my lips after a spray of wind near Samil, hearing how people here still talk about Citroen like family. I keep thinking about that view over the water and how it felt riding back into town with tired legs but a weird sort of lightness too.
