The Experience

I opened my eyes and there was this weird, almost burnt smell in the air — like someone left toast in too long, but it was just the volcanic earth near Teide. Our driver, Carlos, had already started joking about how he never gets tired of these views, even though he’s probably seen them a thousand times. We bounced along in the Jeep, windows down, wind whipping dust into our hair. I kept staring at the jagged black rocks and thinking how they looked like another planet. Carlos pointed out a patch of yellow flowers pushing through the ash — “retama,” he said. I tried to repeat it and got a laugh out of him. The road twisted up and up until my ears popped.

We stopped somewhere on the plateau where you could see Mount Teide’s peak cutting through low clouds. It was colder than I expected — I’d packed for sun but ended up borrowing my friend’s hoodie. There were a few other Jeeps parked around, other groups snapping photos or just standing quietly, letting it all soak in. For a minute nobody said anything; you just heard the wind scraping over stone and some distant voices echoing off the rocks. I still think about that silence sometimes.

Later we wound down toward Masca, which felt like driving into a green crack between cliffs. The road is so narrow that Carlos kept honking before blind corners (he called it “Tenerife style”). In Masca village we got out again — tiny houses clinging to impossible slopes, old men sitting outside with coffee cups, nodding as we passed by. There was this smell of orange blossoms mixed with wood smoke from somewhere uphill. I tried to take a photo but honestly no picture does it justice — maybe that’s why everyone just stands around grinning at each other instead.
