The Experience

The tour starts at your hotel and moves through Tarragona's upper city, where the Roman circus once held 30,000 spectators for chariot races. Built in the 1st century and measuring 325 by 115 metres, it's one of the best-preserved circuses in the West—and you walk through its underground passageways, the Praetorium tower, which later became a royal palace and then a prison. The guide explains how the structure connected the lower city to the provincial forum and what those stone corridors meant to the people who built them.

The amphitheatre sits on the coast, carved directly into bedrock in the 2nd century. It's 109.5 metres long, held up to 14,000 spectators, and the guide walks you through what happened there—gladiator fights, wild beast hunts, public executions, and in 259 A.D., the burning of Bishop Fructuoso and his deacons. A Visigoth basilica was built on the site later, then replaced by the medieval church of Santa Maria del Miracle. The stone tells the story of three religions and four centuries in one place.

You'll see the cathedral, begun in the 12th century in Romanesque style and finished in Gothic, with its soaring rose window and the cloister's sculpture work—one of Catalonia's finest examples of Romanesque art from the turn of the 13th century. The Diocesan Museum inside holds medieval altarpieces, stone carvings, goldwork and textiles from the region. The Roman walls, 3,500 metres originally and now 1,100 metres remaining, border the Old Town and are the oldest Roman construction still standing outside Italy. The tour ends at the Balcó del Mediterrani, a viewpoint 40 metres above the sea where you see the port, the beach and the amphitheatre below, and locals say touching its railing brings luck.
