The experience
Your first time surfing doesn't have to mean traveling to a big-wave destination. Torrevieja sits on the Costa Blanca where the Mediterranean stays calm enough that you can focus on learning the mechanics instead of fighting the ocean. The lesson runs 90 minutes and starts with your instructor fitting you to the right board (goofy or regular stance), then walking you through the take-off maneuver on the sand so your body knows the motion before you hit the water.
Once in the water, the instructor stays with you the entire time. They push your board into position to help you catch waves more easily and give you feedback after each one so you're building technique, not just paddling around. The waves here are small and manageable, which is exactly why this works for people who've never stood on a board. Surfing trains most of your muscles and develops balance and proprioception (the body's sense of where it is in space), which is why instructors often say it's as much a neurological workout as a physical one.
All equipment is provided, including the surfboard and wetsuit. After the lesson, you get a drink to refuel. The beach is wheelchair accessible, and public transportation runs nearby if you're not driving. Guides are available in English, Spanish and Russian.
