The experience
The submarine itself is the draw here: only 15 of these vessels exist in the world, and this one seats 44 people in a spacious cabin where the air stays at sea-level pressure. You descend to 100 feet without a wetsuit, without getting wet, and without any of the physical strain of scuba diving. The 22 large portholes, 11 on each side, frame the ocean floor as you pass through it, and the audioguide (available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and six other languages) walks you through what you're seeing: sea breams, rays, barracuda, eels, groupers and the occasional shipwreck resting on the seabed. Free color fish charts help you identify what moves past the glass.
The whole experience runs about an hour from pickup to return. A coach collects you from Playa Blanca and brings you directly to Puerto Calero's marina, where you board at the submarine dock. After the dive, you get free time to walk around Puerto Calero before heading back. A personalized dive certificate arrives at the end: a keepsake that marks the depth you reached without ever leaving the cabin.
