The experience
Fornells sits on Menorca's north coast, and the water there sits inside a marine protected area. Your guide, Miki, picks the snorkeling route based on what the sea is doing that morning (sometimes Cala Torret, sometimes Fornells itself), so you end up in the clearest water and the calmest conditions. The seabed changes as you move: posidonia meadows (the underwater grass that holds the whole ecosystem together), rock formations, caves, and sand. Fish, octopuses, starfish and sea urchins live in these spaces, and because the area is protected, they are not shy.
The whole outing runs about two and a half hours. You wear a mask, fins and a short wetsuit. The boat carries bottled water and a picnic of Menorcan savoury and sweet pastries, plus juice and Coke. If you want to help, there is an optional activity (collecting plastic from the water using a special hip bag), but it is not required. What you will take home is the underwater photos Miki shoots during the swim, so you have proof of what you saw and who you saw it with.
The guide speaks English and Spanish and will walk you through what you are looking at: how to identify the local species, why posidonia matters to the Mediterranean, and what responsible snorkeling looks like. This is not a race through a checklist of sites. It is built around watching one place carefully and understanding what lives there.
