The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about stepping onto a Segway for the first time in Seville — but somehow that made it more fun. Our guide, Mateo, had this way of making us laugh right away (he called my first wobbly turn “flamenco on wheels”). The city felt different from up here, gliding quietly along the Guadalquivir River while locals strolled or leaned over the railings chatting in bursts of Spanish. There was this faint smell of orange blossoms even though it wasn’t quite spring yet — or maybe I imagined it. Who knows?

We rolled past the Seville Cathedral first, its spires kind of looming and beautiful in that not-trying-too-hard way old buildings have. Mateo pointed out details I’d never have noticed, like how the Giralda tower mixes Moorish and Christian touches. It was busy near the Royal Alcázar but somehow being on a Segway made it feel less overwhelming — you just glide through it all, part of the flow but also apart from it. At one point we stopped by the General Archive of the Indies; I didn’t expect to care about old paperwork but hearing about Columbus’ letters stored inside made me pause.

The best bit for me was cruising through Maria Luisa Park — suddenly everything went quiet except for birds and this soft crunch under the wheels. We had maybe ten minutes there, just enough to breathe in some green before heading back toward Plaza de España (which is even bigger than it looks in photos). The sun hit those tiles just right and people were laughing, taking photos, eating ice cream. I tried to say “Plaza de España” with a proper accent; Mateo grinned and said “almost.”
