experience

What’s the experience like?

“No distractions here — just listen to the floor,” our host whispered as we shuffled into the old stone courtyard of Casa de la Memoria. I’d never been inside a place that felt so close and ancient at the same time — the walls almost humming with stories. The seats were all set tight around a tiny wooden stage, and honestly, I was worried I’d fidget too much or cough at the wrong moment. But then the guitarist started tuning up, and you could hear every little scrape of his fingers on the strings. It was like being let in on a secret.

The singer came out next — she didn’t even need a microphone, her voice just filled the air, kind of raw but beautiful. The dancers stomped so hard I felt it through my shoes (I probably jumped a bit). There’s this moment when everyone in the room holds their breath together — you can smell orange blossoms from somewhere outside and catch little glances between the performers. Our guide had told us earlier that this is “flamenco puro,” nothing fancy, just heart and sweat and rhythm. I tried to clap along once but got lost; one of the locals grinned at me like he knew exactly how lost I was.

No drinks or food served, which surprised me at first — but after a while it made sense. All you do is watch and listen. Even though it’s only about an hour, by the end my hands were tingling from clapping so much (badly). We left out onto Cuna street blinking into the night, still hearing echoes of those heels on wood. I keep thinking about that last song — something about longing, I think — and how everyone went quiet for a second before applause broke out again.
