Kayak across the strait, climb to the lighthouse, swim in the bay

Kayak and hike adventure from Sant Elm to Sa Dragonera, a protected island off Mallorca's southwest coast, combining paddling, a guided hike to Far de Tramuntana lighthouse, and time to swim and snorkel in a small pebble beach. A professional guide leads groups in English, Spanish or German, provides all equipment and safety briefing, and adjusts the route for weather and sea conditions. No kayaking experience needed; children from age 2 are welcome.

The Experience

The day starts in Sant Elm, a fishing village on Mallorca's coast, where you meet your guide and get fitted with a kayak, paddle, life jacket and waterproof bag. After a safety briefing, you paddle across clear water to Sa Dragonera, a former pirate refuge now protected as a natural park. The crossing itself is the route—no motorboat, no sitting and watching. You're moving under your own power, which changes what you notice: the water temperature, the sound of the paddle, the scale of the island as it grows larger.

Once you reach the small natural harbor, you leave the kayaks and hike with your guide to Far de Tramuntana lighthouse. The path climbs, and the guide shares the history of the island, its flora and fauna, and the culture of the area. From the lighthouse, you look back across the strait to Sant Elm and the Serra de Tramuntana ridge. The hike is beginner-friendly—no scrambling, no technical sections—but it is a real climb, not a stroll.

After the hike, there's time to swim and snorkel at a small pebble beach with turquoise water. Snorkel gear is included. You can wade in, float, or sit on the beach and rest. Then you paddle back to Sant Elm together, finishing around midday. The whole outing takes about four hours. The guide may shift the route or timing if wind or sea conditions change, so the day stays safe.

Top questions

Do I need to know how to kayak before I book this?

No. The experience is beginner-friendly and requires no previous kayaking experience. The guide provides a safety briefing and all equipment, and stays with the group the whole time.

What's the hike to the lighthouse actually like?

The hike climbs from the harbor to Far de Tramuntana lighthouse with views back across the strait to Sant Elm. It's not technical or scrambling, but it is a real climb—beginner-friendly doesn't mean flat. The guide shares history and nature facts along the way.

Can I bring my young child on this kayak and hike?

Yes. Children are welcome from age 2, and specialized infant seats are available for kayaking. The pace and the hike itself are designed for mixed-age groups, though a parent will need to assess whether their child can manage the climb and the time on water.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

The guide adjusts the route and timing based on weather and sea conditions to keep everyone safe. You may paddle a different way, shorten the hike, or spend more time in the harbor—the core experience stays, but the specifics shift with the conditions.

Is there time to actually snorkel, or is it just a quick dip?

After the hike, there's a relaxing break at a small pebble beach where you can swim and snorkel in turquoise water. Snorkel gear is included. You have time to float, explore, or rest on the beach before paddling back.
