The Experience

You walk up to Plaza de la Merced in central Malaga and the building is right there — No. 15, where Pablo Picasso was born in 1881. The Casa Natal sits in the heart of the old city, surrounded by the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba, and Gibralfaro Castle rising above the rooftops. The museum occupies the whole building now, plus an exhibition space across the square at No. 13. It's been an official heritage site since 1983, and the Spanish King and Queen reopened it formally — so you're walking into something the country takes seriously.

Inside, the audio guide comes in seven languages: Spanish, French, English, Italian, Chinese, German, and Polish. You move through rooms that hold over four thousand pieces by more than two hundred artists, but the centerpiece is Picasso's own work — his sketchbooks from 1907, the ones he made while preparing "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon." These sketches exist nowhere else in Spain. You also see family photographs, personal objects, letters, and pieces that map out his ties to Malaga, the city he left but never quite left behind. The museum runs temporary exhibitions too, so there's always something rotating through the galleries.

The building itself is wheelchair accessible, all surfaces included, and you can bring a stroller if you're traveling with small children. Opening hours are 9:30am to 8pm every day, including holidays — though they close early on December 24th and 31st. If you're visiting on a Sunday between 4pm and 8pm, entry is free. There are also free days scattered through the year: the Day of Andalucía in February, the White Night in May, International Museum Day on May 18th, and the anniversary of Picasso's birth on October 25th. Young people under 18 get in free when accompanied by an adult, and discounts exist for seniors, students up to 26, and large families — but you have to buy those directly at the ticket office, not online.
