The Experience

The red double-decker pulls up at La Farola stop, closest to the cruise terminal, and you climb to the open-top deck where the city spreads in all directions. Málaga sits between the beach and the hills, and from up there you see it all at once — the cathedral spire, the fortress walls of Castillo de Gibralfaro catching the light, the green strip of Parque de Málaga running down to the water. The bus moves every thirty minutes, so if you miss one, another arrives before you've finished your coffee. You get a 24-hour pass, which means you can hop off at any of the fourteen stops on the red route, walk around, and catch the next bus without thinking about timing.

The audio commentary runs in multiple languages and actually tells you something — not just "here is a building" but why it matters, what happened there, how the city changed. Stop 7 at Playa de la Malagueta is where people get off to walk the beach; Stop 9 at Plaza de Toros is the bullring, and the bus slows so you can see the whole structure. Castillo de Gibralfaro sits high above the city, and the red route takes you to the base, though climbing up is your own choice. The Carmen Thyssen Museum entry is included, so you don't pay again when you decide to go in. Same with the Museo Interactivo de la Música — that's the interactive music museum, and it's one of those places that's worth the detour if you have the time.

If you want a guided walk instead of wandering alone, there's a walking tour that meets at Stop 3 (the port) and covers the cathedral, the Picasso museum, the old Roman theatre, and the Alcazaba fortress — you get a guide who knows the history, and it's available in Spanish and English. The voucher is valid for up to twelve months, so if you're not using it on the day you arrive, you can save it. Wheelchair access is available on the buses, and the stops themselves are spread across the city, so you're not stuck in one area. Hard Rock Café Málaga offers a City Sightseeing menu for 19.95 euros if you want to eat somewhere recognizable. The red route's last departure from Stop 1 is at 6pm on weekdays, 7:10pm on weekends, so you have a real window to move around without rushing back to the port.
