The Experience

I’ll be honest — I was nervous about the whole “flying dress” thing at first. It sounded a bit dramatic for me, but the moment we met our photographer near the Grand Pond in Madrid’s Retiro Park, that faded. She had this calm way about her (and a rolling suitcase full of dresses that made us laugh). The air smelled faintly of grass and something sweet from the snack carts nearby. I remember tugging at the fabric, surprised by how light it felt — almost slippery in my hands.

We started near Palacio de Cristal. I’d seen it on postcards, but up close it’s like standing inside a glassy daydream, sunlight bouncing everywhere. A couple drifted by on one of those rowboats while our guide adjusted my dress so it would catch the breeze just right. People watched from benches — some smiling, one old man giving a little thumbs up when I spun around (I nearly tripped on my own hem). There was this moment where everything went quiet except for birds and the soft click of the camera. Didn’t expect to feel so…floaty? That’s probably not a word but you know what I mean.

Later we wandered into Parterre Garden. Flowers everywhere — reds and yellows and some purple ones I couldn’t name. The photographer showed me how to move so the skirt would billow out behind me (harder than it looks). Li laughed when I tried to say “palacio” in Spanish — probably butchered it. By then I’d stopped caring if people stared; honestly, everyone seemed happy to see something silly and bright happening among all that green.

The photos came later in a private gallery — all those odd little moments captured: me blinking mid-spin, laughing at nothing, sun on my face. Looking at them now, I still think about how unexpectedly fun that afternoon was. Sometimes you just have to let yourself look ridiculous for an hour or two.
