Los Volcanes Reserve hiking tour: 3-hour lava walk
Walk across preserved lava fields shaped by ancient eruptions
A 3-hour guided hiking tour through Los Volcanes Nature Reserve on Lanzarote takes you across lava flows, up volcanic cones and into craters left by the 1730–36 eruptions. An expert guide explains the geology as you walk the 7-kilometre route, and the arid climate has kept the volcanic structures intact enough that the landscape reads like an open-air museum of volcanology. You learn how life slowly returns to the lava and how the Canary Islands came to exist.

The experience
The walk starts at Parking Testeina on the LZ-30 road and moves through terrain shaped entirely by lava. You'll cross lava flows, climb to volcanic cones where craters and lava tunnels are still visible, and see lava lakes: all preserved because Lanzarote's dry climate slows vegetation growth to a crawl. The route covers 7 kilometres over three hours at a low difficulty level, so the pace stays steady without steep scrambles or technical sections.
Your guide stays with you throughout and points out how the volcanic structures reveal the island's history: the eruptions of 1730–36 buried much of the landscape, and another eruption in 1824 added more lava on top. The guide explains what you're standing on and how to read the rock formations. You'll see how pioneer plants colonize the lava and begin the slow work of soil-building that eventually supports larger growth: the visible proof that even barren volcanic ground comes back to life.
Pickup is included from Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen or Puerto Calero. You get trekking poles, a snack of a cereal bar and fruit, and a guide who speaks English, Spanish or French. Wear laced hiking shoes or trainers because the volcanic rock has a rough surface that demands grip. Bring your own water bottle. The meeting point is at Parking Testeina at 09:55.
