The experience
The Nalón is the main river of Asturias and it moves with real current. You'll feel small rapids, waves and natural slides as you paddle the 6 km from Las Caldas Villa Termal down to Trubia, guided by someone who knows where the water runs cleanest and where the wildlife congregates. The route is level II (not beginner-flat, but not expert-only either), and the guide steers you through the best passages. You depart at 10:30 a.m. and finish around 1:30 or 2:00 p.m., with a stop partway to swim if you want to.
This section of river sees almost no other paddlers. The guide is there to help you navigate the current and to point out the waterfowl and riverside fauna and flora that live along the banks. You'll travel in a small, exclusive group: no crowds, no other canoes in sight. Private transport picks you up and brings you back, so you don't arrange your own way to Las Caldas. A double or single canoe is yours for the descent, along with a vest, paddle, waterproof drum to keep things dry, and provisions of water and chocolate. Outdoor changing rooms let you shift out of wet clothes at the end.
You must be able to swim and comfortable in moving water. Children from age 10 are welcome. Wetsuit, booties and towel rental are available as add-ons if you want them.
