Step-by-step itinerary
Walk part of the Camino Primitivo
- Start tour at Oviedo Cathedral
- Walk along Naranco mountain
- Hike 12 km on Camino Primitivo
- End hike at restaurant with mountain view
- Take taxi back to Oviedo
The experience
You start at Oviedo Cathedral, where your guide explains the building's connection to the Camino de Santiago and the pilgrimage routes that branch from it. From there, the walk follows the feet of Naranco, the mountain that overlooks Oviedo, where vultures sometimes circle overhead and the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús monument sits at the summit. After roughly four kilometers through the city itself, the landscape shifts: you leave the urban streets and enter Asturian countryside. Pastures, rolling hills, and forest that make up the first stretch of the Camino Primitivo, the most original of all the Santiago routes.
The full 12 kilometers takes about five hours, and the pace is steady rather than rushed. You'll carry water and two typical Asturian snacks provided at the start, and the walk ends at a restaurant positioned to look out over the Asturian mountains. From there, a taxi returns you to Oviedo rather than requiring a second walk back. Your guide speaks English or Dutch throughout and holds a Pilgrim Credential, the official passport of the Camino, which gets stamped along the way as a record of your journey.
This is a private tour, so the guide adjusts to your pace and stops when something catches your interest. The route works for anyone who can walk steadily for a few hours but doesn't demand mountaineering or serious endurance. It's designed for people curious about the Camino but unable to commit to the full multi-week pilgrimage, or unsure whether they can handle 20–30 kilometers daily.

- Private guide in English or Dutch for the full five hours.

What is the Camino Primitivo and why does it matter?
The Camino Primitivo is the oldest and most original route to Santiago de Compostela, starting in Oviedo. It predates the other famous Camino routes and is considered the path the earliest pilgrims took. Walking even a section of it connects you to centuries of pilgrimage history.
How much of the walk goes through the city versus countryside?
The first four kilometers pass through Oviedo itself, following Naranco mountain. The remaining eight kilometers enter the Asturian countryside (pastures, hills and forest), where the landscape opens up and you leave the city behind.
What happens if I'm not sure I can walk 12 kilometers?
The tour is designed for people with moderate fitness who can walk steadily for a few hours. Your private guide adjusts the pace to yours and can discuss your concerns before you start. The route is on established paths, not technical terrain.
Do I need any special equipment or training?
Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are essential. The tour provides water and snacks. No special training is needed, though regular walking fitness helps. Service animals are welcome on the route.
What makes this different from walking the Camino on my own?
Your guide shares specific knowledge about Asturian history, gastronomy and the landscape as you walk, and holds the official Pilgrim Credential to stamp along the way. The private format means the pace and stops fit your interests, and the taxi return saves a second walk back to the city.
