The experience

I’d always heard about Córdoba’s Mosque-Cathedral, but actually walking across that old Roman Bridge from Málaga felt different: like stepping into a movie set, except the air was thick with sun and something sweet (orange blossoms maybe?). Our guide, Elena, chatted in both Spanish and English on the bus ride, tossing in little stories about caliphs and poets. I admit I dozed off for a bit (those rolling fields outside the window are hypnotic), but woke up just as we pulled into the city.

The group split up at the bridge: some of us went straight for the guided tour (I couldn’t resist), while others wandered solo. The Jewish Quarter is this tangle of narrow lanes where every corner has flowers or someone laughing on their doorstep. Elena pointed out Calleja de las Flores, so tiny I nearly missed it, and told us how locals still leave water out for cats in summer. Inside the Mosque-Cathedral, it was cool and shadowy. I kept staring at those endless arches. She explained how Christians and Muslims layered their histories here. Felt humbling, honestly.

Afterward we had hours to explore. I got lost (in a good way) around Plaza de la Corredera and ended up eating salmorejo at a small bar where nobody rushed me. The waiter taught me to say “flamenquines” right, Li laughed when I tried, and there was this smell of fried ham everywhere. The Andalusian patios in San Basilio were open too. Blue pots everywhere, so much color it almost hurt my eyes after the dim mosque halls. By late afternoon, my feet were tired but I didn’t want to leave yet… There’s something about Córdoba that lingers long after you’re back on that bus to Málaga.
