The Experience

The driver picks you up from your accommodation and drives for an hour up to Mount Aitana, where the air gets cooler and the coast disappears behind you. You get fitted with a helmet, shown how the brakes work (even though you haven't ridden a bike in maybe twenty years), and then you're standing there with a bike in your hands and a guide explaining the route.

The first stretch is about five miles downhill to the village of Penaguila, and yeah, it's steep enough that you feel it in your legs but not so steep that you're white-knuckling the brakes the whole way. The minibus follows behind, so if you need to stop or your knees start complaining, you can hop in and ride the rest. You stop twice on the way down anyway — once just to catch your breath and look at the gorges and moorish castles sitting on the ridges, and once more because the guide wants to make sure everyone's okay. The spring water tastes different up here, colder and cleaner than anything from a tap. After Penaguila, the bikes get loaded onto a trailer and you ride in the minibus to the next drop-off point, which is the highest part of the route.

From there it's another downhill glide into Alcoleja, and this is where the views actually stop you — the kind of thing where you understand why the description said to bring a camera. Around 12:45 pm you pull up at the Safari Aitana Park restaurant for lunch (you pay separately for food, but the setting makes it worth it). The afternoon ride takes you past the village of Sella and down to where the bike route officially ends, which is a local bar where you get a drink and a certificate that says you rode 24 miles through the mountains. The whole thing lands you back at your hotel around 4 pm, which means you've got the evening free.

The thing about this tour is that it doesn't require you to be fit or even remember how to ride properly — the minibus is always there, the route is mostly downhill, and the guide handles the pacing. You wear sensible shoes (not flip-flops), bring a camera, and dress for the season (long trousers and trainers from October through April).
