The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a bike tour in Barcelona, but the first thing that caught me off guard was how our guide, Marta, actually remembered everyone’s name — even after we’d fumbled through introductions in the busy Gothic Quarter. The streets there are narrow and echoey, with this faint smell of coffee and old stone. We wobbled past tiny bakeries and I almost clipped a delivery guy (he just grinned at me, so I guess it happens a lot). Marta kept stopping to point out little carvings or tell us stories about the buildings — I barely noticed how many photos she was snapping until later.

The Mediterranean air hit different when we rolled up to Barceloneta Beach. It was salty and warm, and honestly, I could’ve stayed there all day watching locals play volleyball or just listening to the gulls. We took a bunch of goofy group shots by the Olympic Port — Marta somehow made us look like we belonged there. She even got me to try saying “Barceloneta” properly; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it. Cycling along the coast felt easy compared to dodging people in the city center.

We cruised through Ciutadella Park next, which was full of families and street musicians (one guy playing something that sounded like flamenco on a guitar). The Arc de Triomf looked bigger than I expected up close — red brick against blue sky. Then came Sagrada Familia: you see pictures everywhere but standing under those spires is something else. Marta gave us time to just stare or take photos (she took some for us too), no rush. My legs were tired by Casa Batlló but honestly? Didn’t care. The city feels different from a bike seat — more alive somehow.

Our last stop was the Barcelona Cathedral, where bells echoed down the plaza and pigeons scattered around our wheels. By then my hair was wild from the wind and my water bottle was empty, but I felt weirdly at home in this mix of old stones and new friends. Still think about that view from the beach sometimes — not sure if it’s the sea or just how easy everything felt for those few hours.
