The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the faint sound of wheels on linoleum at Incheon Airport—my own suitcase, rattling behind me while our guide waved a little sign with my name. He smiled right away (I was nervous about my Korean, but he switched to English so fast). The drive into Seoul felt like hitting play after a long pause—city lights flickering past rain-speckled windows. I kept thinking, “Am I really squeezing all this into a layover?”

We started at Gyeongbokgung Palace. The air smelled like pine needles and old stone after the morning drizzle. Our guide pointed out the changing of the guard—bright colors against the gray sky—and explained how the palace once anchored all of Seoul. I tried to picture it without skyscrapers peeking over the walls. There’s something about standing where centuries of footsteps have worn down the stones that makes time feel weirdly thin, you know?

Bukchon Hanok Village was quieter than I expected; just a few locals sweeping their doorsteps or chatting softly. The wooden beams felt smooth under my hand (I touched one when nobody was looking). We wandered narrow lanes, and at some point our guide told us stories about families who still live here—he even waved to an older woman carrying groceries, who nodded back with this tiny smile.

Insadong was louder—shopkeepers calling out, the smell of roasted chestnuts mixing with incense from a nearby temple. We ducked into a teahouse for something hot (I picked chrysanthemum tea mostly because I liked how it sounded). Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin—probably butchered it—and then we just sat there for a bit, watching people pass by outside. Time moved strangely fast and slow at once. Before I knew it we were back in the car heading for Incheon again. I still think about that quiet moment in Bukchon sometimes.
