The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell—incense drifting around Jogyesa Temple, kind of sweet but earthy, mixing with that early city chill. Our guide, Minji, pointed out these old trees at the entrance—she said one’s been there for 500 years. I touched the bark just to see if it felt different (it didn’t really, but maybe that’s not the point). Inside, monks were chanting softly and someone handed me a tiny paper lotus. I still have it tucked in my bag.

We zipped past the Blue House next—couldn’t stop because of security, so we just craned our necks from the van windows. It’s funny how something so important can look almost hidden behind all those trees. Then suddenly we were standing in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The colors on the main hall—Geunjeongjeon—were brighter than I expected, almost like they’d just painted them yesterday. Minji told us about kings and queens who lived there; I tried to imagine what it sounded like back then with no traffic humming outside.

The National Folk Museum is right inside the palace grounds (I didn’t realize that before), and it’s packed with little things from Korean daily life—old shoes, kitchen stuff, wedding clothes. There was this one exhibit about childhood games that made me wish I’d grown up here. After that we watched the changing of the guard at Gwanghwamun Gate; lots of shouting and bright robes swinging around in the wind. My phone photos don’t do it justice at all.

We ended up near City Hall after a quick stop at a ginseng center (smelled kind of sharp and earthy in there). The whole morning went by fast—felt like we squeezed a lot into just three hours without ever feeling rushed. Sometimes I still hear those temple bells when I think back on it.
